Time capsule sealing ceremony at Tuas Nexus exhibition booth

Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, together with Mr Luke Goh, Chief Executive Officer of the National Environment Agency (NEA), and Mr Ng Joo Hee, Chief Executive of PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency officiated the Tuas Nexus Time Capsule ceremony today. The ceremony was held at the Tuas Nexus exhibition booth at the CleanEnviro Summit Singapore (CESG) and Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2022.

The time capsule, put together by the team of engineers from NEA and PUB delivering the Tuas Nexus project, is sealed in commemoration of the construction of the Tuas Nexus – the world’s first integrated waste and water treatment facility planned from ground-up. Tuas Nexus, which consists of NEA’s Integrated Waste Management Facility and PUB’s Tuas Water Reclamation Plant, is set to harness the synergies of the water-energy-waste nexus, to help forge a more sustainable Singapore by optimising land use and maximising energy and resource recovery.

The Tuas Nexus time capsule will be opened in 2032 after the Nexus becomes fully operational. The capsule will reveal a snapshot of Tuas Nexus’ construction progress and its contribution to the Singapore Green Plan’s vision of a circular economy and Zero Waste Nation.

This year, the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) also marks its Golden Jubilee. The Ministry was established in 1972 to tackle issues such as pollution control and environmental health. Items that are symbolic of MSE, NEA and PUB’s efforts to build a green and resilient Singapore for our future generations, and to champion sustainable development were placed inside the time capsule. These items were:

  1. A personal note penned by Minister Fu;
  2. A photo of the Tuas Nexus construction site in 2019, when it was a barren plot of land;
  3. MSE50 commemorative coaster made from recycled plastic waste;
  4. Models of Bins for General Waste, Recyclables and Food Waste (Green, Blue and Brown respectively); and
  5. Bottle of NEWater, Singapore’s third National Tap and key pillar of water sustainability.

Following CESG and SIWW 2022, the time capsule will be transported to the Tuas Water Reclamation Plant’s site gallery, and subsequently displayed at the completed Tuas Nexus Administration Building.
