Speakers at a workshop on Monday underscored the need for proper industrial wastewater management in the country’s economic zones by setting up Central Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs).
Effluents released from small and medium-scale industries can be treated by installation of common ETPs, they said.
The Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and 2030 Water Resource Group (International Finance Corporation/World Bank Group) jointly organised the workshop at a city hotel.
Paban Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of BEZA, attended the programme as the chief guest while Md Rasiul Alam Mondal, Director General of Department of Environment, attended as the special guest.
The aim of the workshop was to gather key inputs from government bodies, industries, technology providers, infrastructure developers, investors and consultants on the status of CETPs along with the technical, financial and managerial models adopted, international experiences and practices, issues of concern etc.
The speakers focused on CETPs as a solution to overcome the constraints associated with effluent treatment in individual industries. CETPs could potentially help in the proper treatment of combined wastewater discharged from various industries.
The speakers also discussed the challenges associated with CETPs.
Sayef Qayyum, coordinator of the Bangladesh programme, 2030 WRG, IFC WB Group, delivered the welcome address.
Bastiaan Mohrmann, regional co-head Asia, 2030 WRG and principal investment officer IFC WB, gave a presentation on BEZA and 2030 WRG technical and knowledge partnership for industrial wastewater management/rapid assessment and financing options: CETPs in EZs. Seema Manghee of 2030 WRG IFC WB Group also gave a presentation on the international experience of CETPs.
