Abu Dhabi sustainable water solutions company (SWS) announced a regional first of hitting 80% utilisation of recycled water in the emirate of Abu Dhabi in August 2023. SWS will showcase its innovations at the 25th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX), held from 15-17 Nov 2023 at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DTWC).

This accomplishment gives a continuous supply of clean water and helps preserve water resources throughout the emirate of Abu Dhabi, progressing the UAE water security strategy 2036. As a result of around 60,000 lab tests annually covering 35 parameters, SWS recycled water can be utilised for agriculture, cooling, and industrial applications and it is distributed to over 20 landmarks across the emirate of Abu Dhabi, including Saadiyat Island, Emirates palace and the Al Wathba wetland reserve. As SWS continues to implement sustainable water solutions for the circular economy, it plans to expand its environmental stewardship across the emirate of Abu Dhabi and globally.

Ahmed Al Shamsi, CEO of SWS Holding, said that the announcement at WETEX of SWS reaching the utilisation of 80% of recycled water is a step towards preserving depleting freshwater resources and supporting the UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs). “With UN climate change conference (COP28) just weeks away, this announcement also reinforces SWS’ commitment to supporting the conference’s water week agenda,” he added.
SWS has outlined its ambition to progress an upward trend in utilisation with an overall goal of reaching 100%. By working with partners at Abu Dhabi and Al Ain distribution companies, this goal will support the reduction of national emissions, which have been reduced by 693,055 tonnes of CO2 per year to progress the UAE 2050 net zero strategy.
