The Singapore Water Association (SWA) has launched its inaugural coastal protection masterclass (Modules I & II), the first industry programme in Singapore dedicated to advancing knowledge and building capabilities in coastal resilience.

The programme received strong support from the water sector, with 36 participants in the first batch. Over eight modules, participants will gain practical insights into coastal processes, climate adaptation, engineering solutions, and nature-based approaches. The initiative is part of SWA’s efforts to foster collaboration, deepen expertise, and prepare industries for the long-term challenge of rising sea levels, while also opening pathways for career transitions.

James Lam, chairperson of SWA’s coastal protection chapter, said:“The Singapore Water Association and its coastal protection chapter are committed to supporting Singapore’s effort to safeguard our coastline from the rising sea. Through this masterclass, we bring together professionals across government, industry, and academia, with the aim to share and exchange knowledge; build expertise and foster collaborations and partnerships. In doing so, we hope to better partner our government agencies to protect our shores for generations to come. We are very encouraged by the strong support of the industry for this inaugural masterclass.”

Yang Zi Qian, training and education lead of SWA’s coastal protection chapter, added:“This masterclass has been specially curated to offer a rich and rigorous learning experience for professionals working on coastal resilience. From foundational science to global case studies, each module has been thoughtfully designed to equip participants with both technical depth and strategic insight. It has been a privilege to work closely with our trainers, partners, and agencies to bring this programme to life. I’m deeply grateful for the support and collaboration that made this possible, and I look forward to the meaningful exchanges and partnerships this masterclass will foster.”

The programme is organised by the Singapore Water Association with support from industry partners and stakeholders.
