The Singapore Water Academy (SgWA) aims to be a leading institution for learning, offering specialised programmes for water engineers and professionals both locally and internationally.
Setting up of the Singapore Water Academy
PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, today announced the setting up of the Singapore Water Academy, an institution for learning for the local and international water sector.
The Academy was officially launched by Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Masagos Zulkifli at the Singapore International Water Week 2016, an international water event that gathers global policy-makers and industry leaders together to address challenges and co-create water solutions.
“The Singapore Water Academy plans, designs, delivers, places and coordinates all training and development in PUB. But in addition to catering for PUB’s own needs, it is fully empowered to serve the larger water services sector in Singapore. The Academy is also well appointed to deliver high-quality training for the international water professional. Ultimately, our aim is to guarantee that everyone who comes through the portals of the Singapore Water Academy will acquire the skills, competencies and proficiencies he requires to do a great job,” said Mr Ng Joo Hee, Chief Executive, PUB.
Singapore Water Management Series
4 Drawing on Singapore’s experience in urban water management, the Academy will introduce the Singapore Water Management (SgWM) series, comprising courses that offer water professionals practical, real-life solutions and best practices in urban water sustainability. For a start, four courses will be offered in the key areas of Singapore’s strengths, namely water quality and treatment, urban flood management and the ABC Waters Programme, water reuse and water supply networks.
5 Targeted at senior utility and industry technical practitioners, the SgWM series will combine traditional classroom face-to-face delivery, where participants can also share their rich experiences, allowing enhanced exchange among course participants.
6 Some of the prominent SgWA faculty such as Prof Joan Rose from Michigan State University and experienced PUB practitioners including Mr Harry Seah, PUB’s Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, will share their knowledge through the SgWM Series, bringing best practices in different aspects of urban water management into the classroom.
Collaborating for success
7 The Academy also signed Two Memorandum of Understandings ( MOUs) at the launch today. The first MOU was signed with Surbana Jurong (SJ), a Singapore urban infrastructure and engineering solutions consultant who will tap on SgWA’s expertise in water infrastructure planning to provide capacity building programmes to both Surbana Jurong staff and their clients. The second MOU was signed with the Singapore Coorperation Enterprise (SCE). The Academy will conduct water-related training and share the Singapore experience for clients of the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE).
8 The Singapore Water Academy has rolled out a host of other programmes for water industry professionals and it welcomes collaboration with external partners to anchor other international water programmes in Singapore.
