Speakers at a symposium held to discuss water stress said that the recycling of wastewater could play a key role in reducing water stress in Pakistan.
The symposium was organised by the Pakistan Academy of Engineering (PAE), focusing on groundwater resource management, water distribution management, the handling of wastewater and utilising the available technologies in order to reduce water stress.
The experts lamented that the Indus basin aquifer is among the world’s second most overstressed source of water. Pakistan is classified as an extremely high water stressed country. Experts stressed that technology assessment should be conducted to see what could be done to reduce water use, addressing water scarcity in the energy sector, municipal water sector and agriculture sector.
