The International Desalination Association (IDA) secretary general Shannon McCarthy and IDA vice-president, Alejandro Sturniolo participated in the 48th Associazione Nazionale di Impiantistica Industriale (ANIMP) national conference at Confindustria, Rome, Italy, on 14-15 Sep 2023. Focusing on ‘water and energy: new scenarios for Italian industrial plants’, representatives from the business, academic, and institutional sectors delved into the relationship between water and energy, highlighting desalination and water reuse solutions to offset water scarcity.
ANIMP president Dr Marco Villa said, “In the past in Italy, we have considered [water] available and easy to source. On the contrary, it is more difficult to obtain. ANIMP include water within its portfolio [and] the agreement with IDA will allow ANIMP and its Italian supply chain be updated in technologies and market trends.”
Silvio Oliva, ANIMP director of water sector, said that this agreement with IDA “will help position the Italian supply chain in the international market”.
“We thank Dr Villa, Oliva, and Edoardo Garibotti, who are leading the new water division of ANIMP, for their vision to making this collaboration a reality,” said McCarthy. “For over the past 50 years, Italian members in the IDA held a large market share in the 1970s building out largescale desalination,” she said. According to the IDA secretary general, many Italian universities and research centres focus on technical and engineering needs for the water and energy sectors, providing new talent to support growth. “The IDA agreement will enable ANIMP to engage in IDA programmes and stay at the forefront of technological advancements and international market trends,” she added.
