Energy Recovery launches pressure exchanger designed for desalination plants

Energy Recovery, a leader in energy-efficient technology for affordable, reliable water and lower emissions, has unveiled the PX Q650 Pressure Exchanger, a next-generation energy recovery device (ERD) engineered to meet the capacity, efficiency, and reliability demands of the desalination industry. The Q650 builds on Energy Recovery’s PX Pressure Exchanger line, offering greater flow capacity and efficiency with reduced mixing, while retaining the durability and reliability customers expect.

Like all PX devices, the Q650 uses Energy Recovery’s proven isobaric design with a single moving part made from highly durable alumina ceramic. This simple design has a 30-year lifespan, requires no scheduled maintenance, delivers a low lifecycle cost, and can reduce a plant’s reverse osmosis energy usage by up to 60%. Published data show PX Pressure Exchangers provide the highest uptime of any ERD in large-scale desalination plants.

PX Q650’s benefits:
• Highest Capacity on the Market: 250–650gpm, a 63% increase over the PX Q400, reducing the number of devices per train and shrinking the ERD array footprint

• Ultra-High Efficiency and Low Mixing: Peak efficiency up to 99% and volumetric mixing as low as 2%, delivering the lowest specific energy consumption available

• Wide Operating Flexibility: Features the highest turndown ratio on the market

“The PX Q650 sets a new benchmark for large-scale desalination,” said Rodney Clemente, senior vice-president of water at Energy Recovery. “It combines decades of proven pressure exchanger performance with the capacity, efficiency, and reliability today’s projects demand, giving customers a scalable solution that lowers operating costs and long-term project risk.”

Warranty enhancements

Alongside the launch, Energy Recovery is doubling ceramic component and performance warranties for high-pressure desalination PXs sold or shipped from 9 Mar 2026.

The enhanced programme provides extra assurance for desalination plants:
• Ceramic components now carry a 10-year industry-leading warranty
• PX device performance is now covered by a 4-year warranty from shipment

PX Q650 specifications are available in Power Model Pro, Energy Recovery’s configuration tool for designing and selecting products for reverse osmosis systems.
