Global engineering and infrastructure advisory company Aurecon has announced the appointment of Stephane Asselin as its new Managing Director for Asia, effective 15 April 2019. The region is a key area of focus for Aurecon, as it targets rapid expansion to capitalise on the network of offices and clients it has developed in Asia over the past ten years.
“Aurecon is a company with a solid reputation and great brand built on innovation, safety, quality and growth, so this is a perfect opportunity for me,” Asselin said. “Asia is a fast-paced region where there are many challenges and opportunities around sustainability, urbanisation, digital transformation and infrastructure. I believe Aurecon is well-placed to take a leading role in accelerating Asia’s development, with the best mix of people, technology and eminence to drive real progress.”
A senior and experienced commercial leader, Asselin has spent over half of his 25-year career living and working in Asia. He has a proven track record in delivering business outcomes and developing a strong talent base focused on executing strategy. Previously, he served at executive level with a range of engineering, environment and architectural consultancies, including as the Executive Vice President for Southeast Asia at AECOM. More recently, he held several senior advisory roles across Canada and Asia.
With a passion for the infrastructure, marine, water, energy, and environmental sectors, Asselin has worked on projects across Asia as well as in North America, Europe and the Middle East. Some of his most recent experiences include helping Vietnam-based Atlas Industries in their expansion into the North American market, and with Canadian government-owned company Société du Plan Nord, where he led their infrastructure and environmental spending programmes.
“The appointment of Stephane is the result of a global search to find the best leader for our company, capable of meeting our growth aspirations in Asia in tandem with our Advisory and Digital businesses,” said William Cox, Aurecon’s Chief Executive Officer. “Stephane is articulate, thoughtful and driven with a great talent for setting client strategy and developing enduring relationships. He will be a major asset, not only to Aurecon, but also to our clients and business partners.”
Aurecon is very optimistic about the Asia market and with good reason. According to the International Monetary Fund, the region is projected to grow 5.4 per cent in 2019 and is at the forefront of digitalisation. During its remarkable recent history of growth, Aurecon has continued to play a key role, partnering with visionary developers and national governments in Asia to bring their boldest and bravest ideas to life.
Its iconic projects include the West Kowloon Station in Hong Kong, Vincom Landmark 81 Tower in Vietnam, the Shanghai Tower in China, and the Mauritius’ Metro Express as part of a Singapore-Mauritius government collaboration. Aurecon has also supported infrastructure development in the region, particularly road and rail systems, and renewable energy, combining the latest technologies with human-centred design to deliver future-ready developments.
As the new Managing Director Asia, Stephane will be based in Aurecon’s Hong Kong office, where he will be responsible for accelerating growth and fully leveraging value for Aurecon clients.
Asselin holds a master’s degree in ocean engineering from the University of Rhode Island in the U.S., and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Université Laval in Canada.
