American Water staff broke records when they raised funds for Water For People

Employees of American Water Works Company, Inc. the largest water and wastewater utility company in the United States (U.S.) raised US$232,000 – a record-setting amount – for Water For People, an international non-profit organisation committed to providing access to improved water and sanitation systems and services in nine developing countries around the world.

With a ten per cent bump from 2016, this is American Water’s most successful campaign since the utility began its partnership with Water For People in 1991, as part of its formal Corporate Responsibility programme that aims to create a lasting and positive impact on the communities the company serves. On top of financial donations, staff of American Water volunteered to raise funds in a variety of unique, creative methods, including, competitive penny wars, silent auctions, and bake sales among others, all which allowed Water For people to get closer to its goal of providing access to clean water to all.

“American Water has a long history of supporting Water For People and we are fortunate to have such generous employees with a wonderful giving spirit,” Deb Degillio, president of American Water and executive sponsor of the utility’s Water For People workplace giving campaign. “The global water crisis is something none of us can ignore so there is no question of why we support this organisation. Additionally, Water For People’s mission echoes American Water’s commitment to building a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Our employee’s enthusiasm, generosity and contribution to help raise funds for this campaign, truly demonstrates our commitment to provide access to clean water for everyone forever.”

“The generosity of American Water and its employees greatly inspires us and helps us deliver our mission of Everyone Forever,” Eleanor Allen, CEO of Water For People, added. “As one of our largest and longest workplace giving campaigns, the support for Water For People benefits the communities where we work. Not only are we helping provide sustainable services, we are reaching to new heights of scale and impact across our nine countries.”
