Sewer blockages in Cape Town hits R$270 million last year

Cape Town’s residents need to do more to help their city overcome the obstacle of sewer system misuse. The problem is so dire that operations to remove inappropriate materials from the sewer system, which are creating blockages and overflows, have to be carried out daily.
Sewer blockages cost approximately R270 million in the 2017/18 financial year. The Cape Town sewer reticulation system is under tremendous stress because it is being misused, although often unknowingly by residents.
Reported blockages and overflows has seen a stable rise over the past two years, from an average of 293 per day in the 2015/16 year to an average of 330 per day in the 2017/18 financial year.
